Saying Goodbye & More Thytalk

Bye-Bye!

No, not to this blog. I may be disappearing for a couple days at a time recently . . . but this blog ain't goin' no where!

(HA!)

No, I'm saying goodbye to Weight Watchers. We can really use the money to go elsewhere and as of right now, it's not doing a lot for me.

Well . . . to be honest? I've not really been following the plan. I've not been counting my points or tracking what I eat. I know I probably should be. But I'm not. Honestly though? I feel better when I'm eating fruits and veggies when I'm hungry and eating until I'm comfortable.

I'm actually learning what hungry is! It's kind of exciting!

I'm also learning that my body no longer likes processed sugar. Eeewwww . . . Not fun. My stomach knows it. But somehow getting the message implanted in my brain and taste buds is a TOTALLY different story! (They still think its a good idea.)

In honor of saying goodbye to WW, my Italian and I went to Target yesterday and got a new scale. :-) YAY!! It shows weight, body fat %, and body water %. It also keeps a memory of all of that. Totally cool.

I've still got a couple more weeks of WW before it runs out, so I'll continue weighing in there on Tuesdays and once its over, I'll weigh in at home on Tuesday mornings.

(I was up 2 lbs when I jumped on the scale last night though! But we'd just come home from a HUGE dinner at a Mexican restaurant. So we'll see what tomorrow brings!)

I've also decided to be a wuss and just move on from my doctor. I've not returned his call yet. But I got a glowing recommendation for a endo that I'm going to try out. I'm just going to gather my latest test results and move on.

Speaking of my thyroid. I wrote a letter to it! (Yes, yes I did.) It's been posted! Dear Thyroid posted my letter today! WOW! I've been amazed at the comments my little written temper tantrum provoked. I didn't realize a low libido was such a common thing! Or how rare it was to have a partner who was SO supportive.

I mean, my Italian doesn't fully understand why I'm tired half the time or why I'm rarely in the mood (sorry probably TMI). But he loves me and is patient with me.

But Dear Thyroid is a FABULOUS website! Loaded with tons of information and an incredible group of people! I've learned more in the past couple weeks from reading the website and comments of other people than I have in the past 2 years of having this stupid disease.

Which brings me to a question that was brought up in the comments. WHY DON'T WE HAVE A RIBBON OR FUNDING FOR A CURE!

I'm walking/running a 5k in a couple weeks for breast cancer. What about thyroid disease? Or thyroid cancer specifically? Seriously?

I don't know where to start to get that ball rolling, but I want it to start! I'll gladly whore myself out raise money for that . . .

HARUMPH!

Any ideas?

  1. Sounds like WW served its purpose and now it's time to move on. Glad you have the courage to do so--I just hope that this blog will give you the accountability you need. If not, WW may be a good investment! :)

Looking forward to reading about Chapter Two in the Thyroid Chronicles...

  2. I did the WW thing for 6 months. No big deal in leaving WW. If it's not the right program for you, then it's not. WW worked for me for 2 months. I lost 10 lbs during that time. Then I stayed exactly the same for the next 3 months, and then gained 2lbs during the last month I was with them. I followed it to a tee, but it wasn't working for me anymore. I have no hard feelings for WW. The meetings really taught me a lot of things - how to make healthy choices, what to do when emotional eating came to play, and knowing where the line fell between hungry and satisfied. I don't think it was meant for someone that worked out as much as I did either - perhaps I wasn't consuming enough to compliment my workouts. Or maybe it's just not made for hypos. Whatever it is, take what you learned and move on to find something that works for you.

My endocrinologist was so excited that I lost 8 lbs in 6 months, that he dropped my Synthroid down a bit, so that I could gain it all back and then some. Aren't doctors awesome?! Speaking of writing letters to your thyroid, where's the place where I can write one to my doctor? lol

Sounds like a a really awesome scale! I don't know about buying a scale for me. I haven't stepped on one in a couple of months, except for at the docs office. The reason why? I used to be obsessed with the scale. I weighed every day. I couldn't help it. It was always there asking me to step on it. Anytime it was unsatisfactory, it ruined my whole day and I was bitchy to everyone around me. But I keep reading that it's important for hypos to regularly weigh themselves. Ugh. I hate the scale! Grrr!! Yeah, I'd like to write a letter to the scale, too. BTW, what scale did you get at Target and how much did it run? that's cool that it calculates body fat and water!

Not sure of what color ribbon. it seems like all the colors are taken up with some random cause. lol

  3. I saw your post over at Dear Thyroid. I'm also hypothyroid (Hashimoto's) and its under control, however I still blame it for my insane mood swings, among other issues :) Reading your blog is like reading my mind. I'll definitely be stopping back to commiserate and sympathize! I saw that you're running a 5k - good job! If you need any training tips - Fitness magazine has some great training programs, etc. That's what I've been using.

  4. okay, so I was thinking about this color ribbon. This is round-a-bout, but whatever. When I think about the thyroid, it's mostly called "butterfly-shaped." When someone thinks of a butterfly, the most common one in their minds that they picture is the Monarch. Monarchs are a bright and beautiful orange. Bright orange is also a color that stands out and calls attention. Waddya think?

  5. Hey Beej!!
I'm terrified to leave WW, but I think between this blog and the support I have around me (especially Jillian Jr!) I'll be okay!

    Sharper! :-)
I had to check the scale. It's a Taylor Body Fat scale. I got it at Target for $26 (I think?). It was on sale down from $30. (YAY FOR SALES!!)
I love the idea of a bright orange one! Maybe with a butterfly etched into it? OOOHH!!! (Now I'm all excited!!)

    Hey Linda,

    Welcome! Thanks for stopping by.
WOW! That's high praise! Thank you!
I love the Dear Thyroid site. It's nice to know I'm not alone (or crazy!).
